Justin Drew Motorsport Looking To Next Season
25/07/2010 6:36:57 AM - Dean Thompson
With the last Speedway season long gone drivers are busily preparing for the season that begins for some in September. For Justin Drew his Modified Production Sedan season begins in Queensland in September before heading back home to begin the fantastic Victorian summer of speed.
The team have put last season’s memories away, memories that some teams would consider a successful season however the high expectations Justin sets himself meant that he considers the season one he would like to forget.
The season began well with victory at Horsham in the VMPA series round as Drew won his third straight ‘Di Watson Memorial.’ It pretty much went pear shaped from there despite qualifying into the Australian title in Tasmania and making the feature fields in some big races including the ‘Australian Open’ at Maryborough.
Since seasons end’s Drew and crew chief Damian Smith have been working out what they would like to do for the next season as far as car is concerned and it has been decided that they will begin the season in the VZ however a change to a VS is looking likely at some stage during the year.
When asked why they would go back to a VS simply they replied “The VS is still a very competitive car. They have a significant weight advantage over the late model Holden’s and Ford’s and we have done some research and believe it is the better way to go in a number of area’s that we feel we can gain an edge over others.”
The team has decided upon where they will be racing beginning with Charlton Speedway in Toowoomba on September 18th for a $3000- to win extravaganza. October 2nd and 30th they return to home territory at the family run Avalon Speedway for point’s races towards the track championship.
Having finished 15th in the points in last season’s VMPA series as a result of not competing in or not finishing rounds the team is keen to run the full six round season and challenge for the association champion position. This series begins at ‘Timmis Speedway’ Mildura on November the 13th and then at ‘Western Speedway’ Hamilton two weeks later to see if he can four peat the ‘Di Watson Memorial’.
December 4th see’s another trip north this time to Lismore for a big $3000- to win before the third round of the Victorian series is held at ‘Redline Raceway’ Ballarat a week later. The traditional Avalon Christmas Cup on Boxing Day is the then the next destination before spending new years in Maryborough for the ‘Australian Open’.
January 15th is the 34th running of the ‘West coast Classic’ at Avalon followed by a feature for Modified Productions at ‘Parramatta City Raceway’. The NSW title is a week later at Nowra and the Drew’s will see if they can pinch that off the northerners.
Round four of the VMPA series is at ‘Sonic Speedway’ Swan Hill this season on February 19th with the fifth round at Rosedale following that on March the 6th and then Alexandra Speedway on March 19th for the final round of the season.
The season closes with three big title events starting with the Victorian at ‘Redline Raceway’ Ballarat on April 9th, the Australian title at Lismore April 22nd to 24th then the Queensland title April 30th at Charlton Speedway closing out the season.
When pressed for season expectations Justin commented “I would like to win one of the state titles as a minimum, finish in the top three at the Australian title and I’m keen to win the VMPA point score whilst winning the ‘Di Watson’ memorial for a 4th time in a row would be an amazing achievement. It is important to set goal’s because that ensures we have something to work hard for, I think ours are realistic.”
For the season past Justin once again thanks all that have been involved including Damian, Jason, Wayne, Josh and family.
