Tdm Australian Title Weekend Results
28/03/2010 6:58:08 PM - Dean Thompson
Team Drew Motorsport recently spent a couple of busy weeks in Tasmania at Latrobe and Hobart competing in the Australian and Tasmania Modified Production Sedan titles and high hopes of a successful jaunt were dashed in both events leaving the team to come back to Victoria and set new goals for the rest of the season making, that being attempts at winning the Australian Open at Maryborough and the NSW title at Lismore.
A sixth place at the Australian title was the better result of the fortnight with an eighth place a week later at Hobart in the Tasmanian title.
In the big one at Latrobe on the 13th of March heat one began well when the # 7 Commodore started on the second row and took the win passing Daryl Etherden of Queensland, New South Wales David Jacobi and reigning Australian Champion Mark Carlin along the way.
In heat two Justin was pushing hard from the rear of the pack and was making some headway when a race car in front of him bounced off the concrete wall slamming into his right front tyre taking out the wheel and ending the charge.
After missing the set up in the third heat Drew made up two places from 8th to 6th passing Darren Pottage whilst another driver dropped out and this wasn’t quite what was needed after dropping the previous heat. This race ended night one.
In the team’s last heat of the weekend on the second night of racing a pole position start was a great chance to take a second win however New South Wales driver Steve Price on the second row was quick off the mark and went on to win with Drew in second.
A feature race 15th place start in the Australian title was a great effort considering the dropped heat. The team expected the track to dry out much more than it did and the car was too tight in the set up and fell away in the last ten laps, however by then the car was in 5th before finishing behind Andrew Blackwell, Steve Price, Aiden Raymont, Greg Worling and Shane McDonald in 6th.
After the race Gary Drew spoke about the weekend. “After dropping a heat we were just thankful to qualify directly into the feature in a quality field. Craig and Wayne and our Crew Chief Damien worked hard this weekend and to get sixth is only because of them. We made the call on our set up and the track didn’t come into us and we have to wear that, these things happen sometimes. Well done to the new Australian Champion Andrew Blackwell and all the placegetters and a big thanks to Latrobe for a fantastic event.”
Team Drew Motorsport would like to thank Damien Smith, Gary Drew, Wayne Shearman and Craig Swanson for the work over the Australian title weekend.
