Drew Motorsport: Another Victorian Title Podium Finish
3/02/2010 12:32:25 AM - Dean Thompson

Justin Drew and the Team Drew Motorsport entourage travelled to Horsham’s ‘Blue Ribbon Raceway’ on January 30th for the 2010 Victorian Modified Production title confident of being at the podium end of the field when the race was said and done and that is exactly the way things panned out when the # 7 VZ Commodore finished 2nd to Andrew Blackwell.

In 40 degree weather the race car was slow out of the blocks during hot laps with Drew keen to head into the pit enclosure to tweak some changes. The race track was slick and one lane when the team hit the track not long after for their first heat where the they started 3rd and finished in 3rd.

The laptop was quickly plugged in on the return to the transporter and the set up adjusted on the race car to bring it into line with track conditions. In the team’s second heat they started towards the back of the pack in 7th spot and in a heat that was important to pick off as many cars as possible to claim some good points and keep at the top end of the qualifying table, Drew pushed forward to finish 2nd to the sister car driven by Anthony Wilson who along with Drew are Circletrack Racecraft cars.

The team’s only win of the night came in the third heat when from fourth position they made a claim for first place passing former Victorian Championship winner Russell Bent.

In the pit enclosure Damian Smith and the hard working team including Jason Evans, Wayne Shearman and Gary Drew completed set up work that they thought would suit the slickened ‘Blue Ribbon Raceway’. “We were here a month back and we won and we believe we know the set up that we are going to need to use to win tonight. Blackwell on the front row will be tough to beat with 3 in a row on the cards for him, however we believe we can turn the tables.” Smith said prior to the race.

Starting on the outside front row in second position with Terry Brown and Darren Pottage behind them the green dropped to set the field loose only to be halted when officials deemed Blackwell (the pole sitter) to have jumped the start. The second attempt to begin was no better as Drew was pinged for a false start.

Finally the race began with Blackwell jumping to the lead and putting a couple car lengths distance between himself and Drew. Those two cleared out over the coming laps to gain a half lap lead and by mid race were on the tail of Australian Champion Mark Carlin ready to put him a lap down.

Drew had nothing though to reel in Blackwell and finished second around 7 car lengths behind with Pottage third.

After the race Drew shared his thoughts. “Well done to Andrew, it is a magnificent effort to have won 3 in a row. We did all we could and we had the best set up for this track and engine that we could find. Thanks to the girls in our team for their support Sam, Rachael and Helen (Mum). To my crew thank you for your hard work so far this season. Let’s go one better in NSW at Lismore next weekend.”
