Dominant Drew Two Wins In Two Weeks @ Avalon
19/01/2009 4:24:19 AM - Dean Thompson
For the second week in succession Justin Drew headed to victory lane at Geelong’s Avalon Raceway winning Round four of the Victorian Modified Production Series. The win is Drew’s second win in the four round series having won at Nyora in Gippsland earlier this season.
The series was making it’s return to Avalon after some season’s away and Drew’s home track advantage showed as he found away around his main rival coming off turn two once more. Last week it was Darren Cockerill and this week Mark Carlin came off second best as Drew found the high line and roared into the lead down the back straight of the race track.
With three heats and a final racing began from sixth position in the team’s first heat. With Phil Pottage, David Smith, Michael Solomon and Fiona Verhoeven in front of him and Kenny Griffey alongside the #7 Circletrack Racecraft VZ Commodore carved through the field to take victory ahead of Smith and Griffey.
From fifth position in heat six Drew was unable to get by Anthony Wilson in his Justin Drew’s previously owned race car and Mick Hetherington. The team at this stage were reasonably happy with set up with Damian Smith advising that the team would just tighten a few nuts and bolts and look at the shock set up as the track was a little rough due to the Super Sedan racing on the same program.
In heat seven for Justin’s last preliminary run a front row start made light work of the chase for victory as he led home Calvin Watts and Hetherington to give himself a front row feature start alongside Mark Carlin.
The race got away with Drew stamping his authority early by claiming the lead coming out of turn two down the back straight for the first time. Carlin and Watts tucked in behind him with the rest of the field 10 metres back in their own battle for position.
Out front it was Drew leading all the way to record victory ahead of constant adversary Mark Carlin and Andrew Blackwell, Smith, Neil Watson and the field. After victory Drew had this to say “We are on our way right now. Everything about the car feels good and it’s coming around to state title time with events at Murray Bridge and Warrnambool coming up. I’d like to thank my family (the Drew’s) for getting the VMPA event back on the calendar for this season and look forward to more good fortune in the coming weeks.”
