A Few Laps Short Of Victory
23/12/2008 9:05:58 PM - Dean Thompson
Team Drew Motorsport consisting of Justin (Driver), Damian Smith (Crew chief) and Justin Evans (Senior Crew) went for A long country drive on Friday evening December 19 as they headed out from Geelong to Dubbo to compete in the NSW State Modified Production Sedan title on December 20th.
After a sleep in the back of the transporter at West Wylong Dubbo was within reach and Drew was confident of a good showing off the back of Victory in the ‘Di Watson Memorial’ at Nyora Speedbowl early in December. Once at the track Drew and the crew were impressed with the infrastructure. “Dubbo have done a great job this venue is race team and spectator friendly and they are to be congratulated, I’m looking forward to getting out on the track.” Drew commented before racing began.
With three heats to complete in the hope of earning enough points to qualify for the feature, the team began a little shaky with a fuel leak and the injector popping off the engine. Once the issues were attended to the ‘Circletrack RaceCraft #7’ started off outside pole and easily went on to win from Glen Pagel.
Having established that the car was concern free the crew had a relatively relaxing time leading into heat two where a second row start awaited Drew. Greg Worling from the front row took the win and Drew finished in second place.
A huge effort from the rear of the field was going to be required to reach maximum points in heat three. The track was slick and the car was quite ready to handle a slick track in the heats and Justin Drew came home fifth.
With no major changes in the set up for the feature accept to set up it for a black top track Drew began in seventh spot. On the very first corner of the race the rear end of the VZ Commodore of Drew sustained damage when a race incident seen Darren Cockerill hit the left rear wheel on the race car and that resulted in bending components effecting the rear of the race car. Andrew Blackwell and Darren Cockerill and others couldn’t rejoin the race with the damage they had.
At the restart the team circulated in around fifth spot in the field before making a pass on Jeremy McClure and Bryan Galley around the half way point of the 35 lap feature race. The race was halted again around this point when mark Carlin lost a wheel and Worling and Pagel couldn’t restart.
At this restart the team was 2nd and chased Steve Price for 12 laps. Price pulled away before Drew started to reel him back in and if only a few laps were added onto the lap scorer’s sheet they might have got there. Price took the win and Drew settled for second that he was delighted with.
“Considering what happened on the first lap we are lucky to have started the race, seems to be a bit of damage to the rear end and we will need to check that out before we race at home next Friday night for the Christmas Cup and then Swan Hill the next day for VMPA series round. Congratulations to Pricey and Dubbo thank you for your hospitality.”
Team Drew Motorsport thanks Phil’s Geelong Tune Up for Dyno work and CircleTrack RaceCraft for work on the car before the title and Damian Smith and Jason Evans for their efforts over the weekend.
