Drew Defends Di Watson Memorial Champion Status
7/12/2008 2:56:16 PM - Dean Thompson

Team Drew Motorsport headed to Nyora Speedbowl on December 6th to defend their status at Di Watson Memorial Champion with 12 other competitors intent on doing whatever they can to make sure that didn’t happen.

In arriving at Nyora TDM by passed their own home track at Avalon in Geelong to chase stronger competition with some big race meetings on the horizon including the NSW title on December 20th in Dubbo the chance to battle with two key opponents for that title in current Victorian State champion Andrew Blackwell and current South Australian State champion Bryan Galley was most important for the team.

Three heats were run with victory in the first heat over Michael Hetherington and Neil Watson getting the team off to a great start. As a result of car retirements Drew made the most of a second front row start for the evening in his second heat this time leading home Anthony Wilson and Blackwell before finishing the third heat in third place behind Kellie Atkins and Mick Wolbers.

Speaking with Justin about why he didn’t go to Avalon he had this to say. “My family are respectful that I need to chase some races and although I will race at home more this season I feel obligated to defend events I won the season before. Defending the Di Watson Memorial and the Vic Hellas Memorial later in the season was always in my plans. The race at home tonight was just a support to the Sprintcars, where as at Nyora tonight we are the main show, I needed to be here to support our category.”

The CircleTrack RaceCraft #7 VZ Commodore started the feature race in prime position to defend the title with a pole position qualification, alongside was David Smith from Mildura and Graham West from Bendigo was behind. The race started with a 3 cars trying to fit through turn one and turn two, however it was Drew that squeezed out of turn two in the lead and that’s were he was to stay for the next 20 laps.

Smith and West took turns in second spot before Drew cleared out by a distance with West following him. Drew crossed the line after 20 laps with a healthy distance between himself and West, Smith, Wilson and Blackwell. Back to back Di Watson Memorials was a fantastic achievement and Justin noted this in his victory speech. “I’m very proud to have won this event back to back and to Neil Watson and the VMPA committee thank you for your efforts to ensure this event runs every year. To Nyora thank you for your support of Modified Sedan racing and I will see you again later in the season.”

As he loaded the car on the race trailer Drew was to find out that he broke the right rear driveshaft as he crossed the finish line to take victory.
